Video, hardware and software responce

1. Using an Olympus camera was a bit of a downgrade from what even a middle school-er might use these days. But that doesn't mean I couldn't find a good use for it. Using older grade equipment can be extremely useful when trying to get an aged effect, or perhaps "dirty" footage. That would take much more effort faking in a digital editor. I chose to not make my images clear, in focus, or even steady sometimes because that's just a losing battle. For point and shoot it was modestly easy to use, so for that I am thankful.

2. I chose to use what tools I had to fit the idea in my head. Admittedly that idea was influenced by tools as well. My weapons of choice, Apples Final Cut Pro, and After Effects. Really all the editing I had planned to do could be done in FCP, but now that I have the great gravy train that is After Effects its hard not to see the benefits of using it in place of FCP. After Effects can do a lot more then what I used it for on this project but what it does, it does well. The only grip I have is that using two editing software means a host of new possible problems that you need to think about ahead of time, so as to not horribly ruin your edits, or degrade the quality inadvertatly. Also I am newer to AF than FCP, but Im not that big an expert with FCP either. So my work time was a little longer then I had hoped, but it's a learning process.

My Ten Improvments To Make

1. Is their a better way of blocking the wind for the mics?
2. How can I use the surrounding environment to manipulate naturally, sounds?
3. Where can I see the most startling contrast of the city's downtown and the west side?
4. How can I alter the various art around the city visually?
5. Where does the environment appear within non-reserve areas?
6. Where is the busiest place in the city?
7. When is the busiest place?
8. Where can I find people interacting with each other?
9. Where can I find no people in the city?
10. Is their a lone bench under a single light post in this city?

Drft 1 Assessment

1. A common occurrence in a cirt is traffic, and while part of my goal for the first drift would include these noises, I was frequently interrupted by cars while gathering smaller more precise sounds. Though I was only walking around with my DIY mics, I still had a moment where people would stop what they were naturally doing if they noticed my presence, thus cutting short some interesting sounds.

2. Before even starting to walk, I decided to simply sit at my start point and leave the recorder on and just listen for a good 30 minutes. Since the day I chose was a relatively nice day, and it was at about 3:30 PM, I got to enjoy a early fall day. The leaves had just started to fall, and were still bright red and orange turning the ground to fire where they landed. People were getting home from work, and kids were out of school. The wind was light but present enough to toss leaves around the ground in an amusing fasion. Another moment would have to be durring my night walk, where I got a simple joy out of people watching around the bars near me. Watching people recognise someone in the street from a car, and their back and forth was quite entertaining.

3. I want on the walk with a clear head, I was very ready to just simply take a walk and pay attention to my surroundings. I drive for a living so slowing down my speed of interaction with the environment was great. Things that really got to me were really just reminders of what the neighborhood is, it's inhabitants. Everything comes from those who live in the quite buildings. Realising that kids do live nearby and, when the sun is up, are quite apart of the neighborhood.

4. The best experience of the drift had to be the one I described in my second answer. As described above, stopping and relaxing with the little bit of fresh air was a much needed experience for me. Most of my classes make me stay indoors staring at a computer, while work keeps me busy long into the night. Watching the city actually in a positive light was a sight I also was not used to. The negatives always have a way of over shadowing the positives after the fact.
